CO2-Balance Magdeburg

As a member of the Climate Alliance, the city of Magdeburg has committed itself to reducing CO2 emissions by ten percent every five years. This is a result of the international political efforts to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 20 % by 2020 (EU 20-20-20 targets). The implementation of these targets cannot be achieved without greater action on climate change especially at the local level.

The aim of the project was, based on previous CO2 balances (from 1992, 1994 and 2005), to quantify and transparently present the development of local energy consumption and CO2 emissions from 1990 to 2007 and to decide on a course of action. Using a detailed energy and CO2 balance from energy providers and sectoral stakeholders, action areas were identified in which the city of Magdeburg has the potential to achieve reductions. A standard method was implemented using the software ECO2Regionsmart from Ecospeed S.A. to create the energy and CO2 balances so that Magdeburg can compare their emissions both with other municipalities of the Climate Alliance and with national averages.

B.&S.U. mbH was responsible for the collection, customisation and evaluation of data. Based on this evaluation, a course of action for the city’s future climate policy, including potential activities, was developed. In addition to this, B.&S.U. mbH presented the results and provided support in terms of publicity.

Finally, it was identified which of the project results also meets the requirements of a municipal energy report, thus preparing Magdeburg for its participation in the European Energy Award®.
