Competitions are a popular and successful tool to provide incentives and reward individual achievements accordingly. Sport is an example of where competitiveness is of key importance, but it can also be found in many other areas of life. In cooperation with our international partners and with support from the European Union, B.&S.U. mbH has developed and successfully implemented competitions on energy efficiency and climate protection for municipalities, businesses and private individuals. The competitions have been held in parallel in many European countries and actively supported by various German Federal States and municipalities in Germany.

A key objective is to achieve continuity, so that the contestants and participants are motivated to long-term behavioural change. It is also important to carry out the correct form of measurement and assessment to ensure a fair comparison of performance.

The B.&S.U.’s competitions: the European Energy Award (eea), the energy trophy® and energy neighborhoods raise the target groups’ awareness of energy and climate change on an ongoing basis and, of course, all those who participate get an image boost.

Furthermore, great savings can be achieved at a low cost and the competitions allow for direct comparison (benchmarking) with other competitors, and also to share experiences and good solutions.

The aim of the competitions is to implement activities to improve energy efficiency and climate protection on a municipal, corporate and private level. They are less about expensive investments, but rather about changing behavior, reaching energy goals on a consistent, step-by-step basis and the correct use of resources. Competitions could be implemented at the local level. They could be supported by the Federal state and could address an individual company or a particular social group.
Each of the competitions mentioned above can achieve permanent energy savings of 8 % to 30 % without a large financial investment.

The three competitions allow B.&S.U. mbH to offer a complete range of tried and tested instruments for Federal states and municipalities which enable the involvement of companies and private households too.
